Virginia was the largest and arguably one of the most important places in the development of the United States. It makes sense that you’d find many historical battlefields, buildings, and architecture throughout the Old Dominion.
Whether you’re passing through or you’re staying a while, we’ve highlighted some of the best historic landmarks you might be interested in.
Some of these historic attractions will take more of your time than others, but if you want to learn some fascinating things about America’s past, come to any of these museums and landmarks.

If you’re interested in American history and want to see a collection of artifacts and books from the Confederacy, the Octagon House is the place to be. The 19th-century house is stocked with memorabilia from a time when the country was all but United. Walk through the house today.

This quaint museum lies in a small neighborhood home, but the stories inside are larger than life. Discover the powerful stories of Black Americans who overcame slavery, civil rights abuses, and more.

While not a full-fledged museum, the Jackson Ferry Shot Tower is a quick pull-off that shows off how Civil War soldiers built ammunition for war. Shouldn’t take more than 20 minutes.

Skip past the founding of America to visit a simpler time. Learn the lore, customs, and survival tactics of Native Americans at the Indian Village. The experience is authentic and instructive.

Considered by some to be the “First Woman President” due to her husband’s condition (President Woodrow Wilson), learn about Edith Wilson’s life at her birthplace museum.

The Rock House was the home of the first physician at the Rock House Museum. Spend your thirty minute tour exploring the facility that now contains Civil War artifacts.

Come to the renowned Graham Mansion, a 19th century house that is now being haunted by spooky specters. While not really a museum, the Haunted Graham Mansion is a great way to be spooked and thrilled on Halloween.
Not only can you see amazing history in Wytheville, you can take it home with you. Come to these interesting and eclectic antique stores in to snag a dusty, forgotten treasure for you or someone you love.

This is probably the most relaxed antique location in Wytheville. They are constantly displaying pictures of different set pieces and furniture items on Facebook, so you can decide pretty quick if this stop is for you.

Become a better antique hunter at Snoopers. Learn about the different levels of the hobby, and find some great offers inside the mall.

Don’t have a lot of time to shop around? Jojo’s Attic is a boutique that sells a variety of unique items. It’s well lit and is just fun to look around at.

Easily the biggest antiquing location in Wytheville. You come here if you’re serious about collecting. You’ll find everything from old toys to Mayan pottery. Don’t miss out on this one if you love history hunting.
